Green Car of the Year Award
The Green Car of the Year Award goes to……….the Volkswagon Jetta TDI clean diesel vehicle. According to Ron Cogan, editor and publisher of Green Car Journalsays that this Jetta “raises the bar significantly in environmental performance.” This car is fuel efficient with 31 mpg in the city and 41 mpg on the highway. The Jetta offers the fuel economy of a gasoline-electric hybrid but it is more affordable starting at $21,990 for the sedan and $23,590 for the station wagon.
Diesels have been the vehicle of choice for the fuel efficiency and reduced emissions in Europe for a long time. Half of all new car sales are diesels, but in the United States only less than 1 percent of new car sales are diesels. This Jetta meets the emissions standards in all 50 states without expensive and complicated emissions technology.
The Jetta TDI beat out the BMW 335d diesel, Ford Fusion hybrid, Saturn two-mode hybrid, and the Smart ForTwo city car for the award of Green Car of the Year. Last year, the Chevrolet Tahoe hybrid SUV won this award. Congrats to the Volkswagon Jetta TDI!
